Competition for The Coolest Dream Trip by Lonely Planet & STA Travel

A wise man once said “the only thing cooler than taking a big trip, is taking a big trip that someone else helps fund.” Lonely planet, the travel guide company, and STA travel, the “book cheap stuff online” company, are offering to do just that for someone with a really cool dream trip.

Write the best 500 word or less explanation of a dream trip and win the grand prize of 5,000 AUD and enough lonely planet books to build a small fort. Oh yeah, and there are 14 other winners who also get free guide books and their dream trips published. The deadline for submissions is October 19th.

As an added bonus, submissions are through a discussion thread. It looks like we will all be able to read what other potential Shakespeares of the Sahara have dreamed up.

Good Magazine has a cool interactive map with the routes taken by several historic voyages. It reveals that the Union Pacific Transcontinental Railroad is misnamed and how Pequod’s voyage in Moby Dick was almost a sin wave. If only they had gone a little closer to Japan.

My favorite part: they fight wearing a traditional dress and petticoats.

I have been spending my time preparing for an upcoming trip to Italy. Who knew that trying to get a debit card with low currency conversion fees could be such a pain?

You know…remember that time you got your arm replaced with a mechanical lift? Never again did you have to slide the couch when reorganizeing the den. Now you pick it the fuck up. That’s just how you roll.

Cracked has a funny article on various hand gestures that can get you in trouble in non-euro-north-american parts of the world. The thumbs up in the middle east and the OK sign in Brazil are classics (that I had kind of forgotten about until I read the article). The others on the list are still interesting, but less cool. They even sprung a different definition of the word “gesture” on us with “Give an even number of flowers in Russia.”
